The Gloria, a joyful hymn of praise and supplication, is taken from the ordinary of the Mass. Vivaldi's setting is for four-part chorus and orchestra with three soloists, two sopranos and one alto. It is divided into twelve contrasted movements, each characterized by its own mood and musical texture yet still managing to preserve a sense of formal coherence. Vivaldi's major musical contributions have been instrumental works. He produced over 500 concertos, and his vocal works were highly influenced by popular opera where the orchestration plays a predominant role and the choral lines are limited to homophonic passages. Regardless, Gloria displays Vivaldi's unique compositional style and can be regarded as a fine example of his vocal music.
Accompaniment will be provided by the Edison College Chamber Orchestra and Mary Griffin Seal, continuo.
